Design DNA

One continuous photograph occupies most of the first-view content plane and remains the primary subject; a small set of navigation, identity, orientation or campaign labels sits at the perimeter or in a quiet edge zone. The image may be edge-to-edge, inset within a frame, or surrounded by a dark matte. The photograph need not have an empty center: several core examples put a person or object near the middle.

Keep

  • A single continuous photo or photographic/video still owns most of the opening content area.
  • Only restrained orientation/navigation/identity text is added around the frame.
  • The media remains visually primary, with no required independent card grid or large text block.

Change

  • Short caption/tagline at top center, lower left, or another edge with adequate contrast.
  • Logo mark, menu, page/progress indicator, or narrow lower project rail.
  • Inset page boundary, pale frame, or dark outer surround.
  • Photo can be a portrait, landscape, campaign image, or still from video; source subject and color treatment vary.
  • Talent, fashion, water, desert, studio, brand, season, slogan, language, and specific campaign imagery.
  • Exact placement of caption, presence of a playback control, and use of an inset matte.
  • A supposed clear center: the centered portrait in htb-0138 and centered person in awb-0283 directly counter that requirement.

Avoid

  • Do not copy the reference identity, written content, trademarks, or distinctive branded artwork.
  • Do not reproduce a gallery monitor, browser frame, or photographed device that merely presents the original website.
  • Do not substitute a generic card-and-gradient landing page if it removes an essential rule.
  • Do not turn a failed image, cookie overlay, loading indicator, or blank capture into a design invariant.
On a new subjectFor a conservation center, use one wide, continuous photograph of field work as the opening canvas, place the center’s identity and two navigation links in the upper corners, and add one concise project/date caption in a quiet lower edge. If a frame or matte is useful, keep it secondary to the photograph. Use an image subject with its own focal point and avoid overlaying large type across it.

Layout

Five defining-core images show the same media-first relationship with different framing. TBD Post is an edge-to-edge portrait with four small edge labels/mark. Slow is an edge-to-edge water scene with a tiny top-center title, lower-left brand line and one bottom-right indicator. Keeper LA fills the screen with a close sports portrait, lower-left name and right progress labels. Studio Seitaro sets one broad image inside a dark surround and puts identity/menu labels inside its top edge. Estudio Niksen places a framed broad campaign photograph beneath a tall pale announcement/navigation band and anchors title/action lower left. The image subject may occupy center; keep text quiet rather than preserving an empty center.

Type

Core captions are small relative to image and may be compact sans, uppercase tracked microcopy, or a restrained serif word. Case, font style and exact location vary. The available evidence does not justify a universal type family or fixed caption position.

Color and surface

Most cores derive color from the photo/video frame. Two use a visible dark surround or pale page/frame, so neither pure full bleed nor no framing is mandatory. Distinct UI surfaces, borders and shadows are absent or very restrained; the media provides the main texture, palette and contrast.

Components

Small navigation/identity marks, a short caption or campaign label, and sometimes an index/progress cue. Not all appear together. A logo/menu/announcement strip can frame the photograph; no card system or large CTA recurs across all five.

Behavior

All five defining references are gallery stills: live responsive reflow, hover, motion, scroll and transition behavior is unknown. Supporting lafour.com is an exact current desktop screenshot with corresponding desktop/mobile measurement files. Its project captions measure 12px/14.4px line-height at both widths, and DOM counts list video elements; that establishes neither a shared core style token nor visible playback/motion. No actual behavior is claimed from still frames.

Estimate

Use a continuous image across roughly 85–100% of the opening field; keep most overlay labels around 11–16px and close to the edges.

Measured

Matched desktop/mobile viewports: 1440×1000 desktop; 390×844 mobilelafour.com · one supporting live screenshot only; no core responsive rule

Measured

Project caption text: 12px; 14.4px line-height; 400 weight at desktop and mobilelafour.com · matching supporting live page record; not generalized across five gallery cores

Estimate

Three edge-to-edge photographic cores vary between portrait, landscape and close crop. Captions/labels remain small and lie at the upper/lower perimeter; the focal subject can occupy the image center.

Estimate

Both preserve a dominant single photo while adding a distinct frame: dark outer matte around an inset image in Studio Seitaro, pale header and fine inset border in Estudio Niksen.

Estimate

A full-screen landscape campaign frame carries tiny top-edge orientation labels and a bottom project thumbnail strip. This expands the allowable edge index but remains supporting evidence, not a core rule.
